WORCS, Round 3 Race Report

This weekend saw Cody back in the Polaris Industries, Cognito Motorsports, UTVunderground.com RZR570 UTV for Round 3 of WORCS in Lake Havasu AZ. Entering the 570 in the Production 700 class one would think it’s already at a disadvantage in terms of engine displacement as the 570 is over 100cc’s smaller than its competitors however, that’s just a minor detail.
After the misfortune of round two R3motorsports went to work relocating the radiator to the rear of the car and re-welding the rear suspensions uprights then gusseting them for additional strength. They then installed a new set of cam shafts supplied by Team Alba Racing that were developed to compliment the engines already potent power delivery. Fox re-valved the shocks, Benchmark Performance re-flashed the ECU to provide an additional 1000RPM of engine speed then it was off to Alba Racing for dyno tuning. After replacing the silencer, modifying the intake, and installing a custom fuel controller the outcome was an additional 5 horsepower.
At the track the weather was overcast and 60*, Cody lined up in row three, there were 6 cars in the 700 class and a total of 28 entered in four rows as both Production 700 and 850 raced together, each row has their own start 45 seconds apart.
As the green flag flew for his row Cody rounded the first turn in second place and held this position on the brutal Havasu track for a lap and a half when he had a miscue going off course and getting stuck. Once freed he he found himself in last place and went to work on the field and with lap times just under eight minutes, it gave him time to work.
By the end of lap four he was back in second and closing on the leader, “The track was so tough it was wearing me out but I knew if I kept pushing I might have a shot at the win.” Cody closed the 30 second gap on the leader to within two seconds two turns from the finish however, he was out of time. He finished the race second place in class and fourth place overall out of 28 in the combined Production 700/850. He also turned the fastest lap time in class and second fastest lap time overall as well.
“The power the engine makes is so much stronger now and the course was so rough I totally over drove the car. We haven’t had a chance to install a sway bar yet so I had to push hard on the straights to make up the time I lost in the turns. I beat the RZR570 to death and it took it with no problems at all, great car! Once we add a sway bar and a little more tuning on the shocks we’ll be good. By the next round I’ll have a new ported cylinder head, ported throttle body, and hopefully Alba has our new pistons. Speed World is going to be fun.”
